Step-by-Step Guide: How to Get Your OpenAI API Key

The OpenAI Developer Platform lets you generate API secret keys to integrate AI models into your applications and workflows.

Step 1: Access the OpenAI Platform

1. Open your browser and go to platform.openai.com.

2. Sign in to your account, or click Sign up to create a new one.

Step 2: Navigate to API Keys

1. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on API keys (or go directly to [platform.openai.com/api-keys](https://platform.openai.com/api-keys)).

   

Step 3: Add Billing Details (Required)

1. Navigate to Settings > Billing.

2. Click Add payment details to attach a valid payment method and add initial credit to your balance.

Step 4: Generate Your Secret Key

1. 1. Return to the API keys page and click Create new secret key.

1. Enter a descriptive name for your key (e.g., Demo Key).

   

2. Set your preferred permissions (default is set to All Permissions).

3. Click Create secret key.

Step 5: Copy and Secure Your Key

1. Click the copy icon to save your new key to your clipboard.
